Bland County was created in 1861 and named after Richard Bland on March 30th, 1861. Bland County is within the Appalachian region and contains many river valleys containing the head waters of North Fork and Holston River and the Jefferson National Forest which covers a vast majority of the county with the Appalachian Trail going through its' ridges and valleys.
Tourism in bland county is becoming popular for its' many rivers, lakes and streams for fishing, camping and hiking. With I77 running through the county provides easy access to the county.
Bland County is surrounded by Mercer County in West Virginia, Giles County, Pulaski County, Wythe County, Smyth County and Tazewell County.
Bland County has two communites of Bland, which is the county seat and Rocky Gap, Virginia which is where three waters meet: Clear Fork, Wolf Creek, and Laurel Fork which is known by many anglers as a great spot for large trout.
